Crook County Cemetery District

The largest cemetery in Crook County is Juniper Haven Cemetery which has it's first marked burial in 1870. There may be others that are earlier, which are unmarked. Juniper Haven Cemetery and the Crook County Cemetery District are located on the north side of Prineville on Main Street, at the top of a hill over looking Ochoco Valley.

Deschutes County Cemeteries
www.rootsweb.com/~ordeschu/ Camp Polk Cemetery Located four miles northeast of Sisters. It was named after an Army post that was established in October of 1865. Its main purpose was to be a deterrent to hostile Indians, but it was abandoned in May 1886 after it proved ineffective. The first marked grave is July 3, 1880. From Sisters travel north on Camp Polk Road 31/2 miles. Turn left on Cemetery Road. This is a dirt road and the cemetery is about 1/2 mile at the end of the road. Antelope- There are two cemeteries here.
Bruno - Also known as Warm Springs Agency - North of Warm Springs - There are three separate cemeteries in this area.
Dry Creek- 3 1/4 miles N. of Warm Springs, at Eagle Butte
First German M.E. Church - SW of Metolius on the corner of Elbe and Franklin.
Geneva- 1 1/2 mile North, 1 mile East of Geneva site, Steelhead Falls
Grey Butte- 5 miles east of Hwy 97 S. of Madras. Established late 1800s.
Grizzly- Grizzly Mountain - 20 miles SE of Madras
Hale - 4 miles S. of Madras on Highland Lane in Culver. Established late 1800s. Also known as Culver IOOF.
Hay Creek - 11 miles east of Madras, Teller Butte
Kalam a- 1 mile S. of Warm Springs.
Maupin - Degner Canyon
Metolius - established late 1800's.
Milo Gard - 7 miles NW of Madras on Fir Lane, 1 mile W of Hwy 26. Established late 1800s.
Mt. Jefferson - 1 mile NE of Madras off Hwy. 97. 3/4 mile E. on Loucks Rd. Established late 1800s.
Round Butte - West of Madras
Seekseekqua - 11 miles S. of Warms Springs up the Deschutes River, at Seekeseequa Junction. This is a Paiute Indian Cemetery. There are two different cemeteries here.
Tenino- 1 mile SW of Warm Springs.
Upper Warm Springs River - 5 miles NE of Warm Springs
Woods- Ashwood - 27 miles East of Madras - Two separate cemeteries.

The nine member HLC serves as a citizen advisory body to the Deschutes County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) and to the City Councils in Bend, Redmond and Sisters. The role of the Commission is to help property owners preserve historically and architecturally significant buildings and districts while allowing modifications for contemporary use.

Camp Abbot Officers' Club
Sunriver Resort 541/ 862-7212 The U.S. Army claimed the acreage where Sunriver sits today as training grounds and called it Camp Abbot, which opened in September 1943, prepared corpsmen for maneuvers by building bridges across the Deschutes. The Camp Abbot "Officers Club," the only structure remaining from bygone days, was transformed into the Great Hall, where John Gray, in 1969, unveiled Sunriver to the public.

Drake Park Pavilion
Built in 1983 with funds donated by the Rotary Club of Bend. The pavilion is located on Mirror Pond in Drake Park, which is right in the heart of downtown Bend. The structure, constructed of individual panels placed in an arched design, are embellished with cement "carvings" of geese and cattails representing the ever present geese and swans on the adjacent Mirror Pond. During the summer when events are held, the pavilion is outfitted with a bright multi-colored canopy that closely resembles a hang-glider.

Lava Island Rock Shelter/Cave
Fourteen miles south of Bend. This large forest of lava tree molds is located opposite of the Sunriver turn-off, south of Bend on Highway 97. Turn east on Forest Road 9720 and proceed nine miles to the trail head, within the Deschutes National Forest. A paved, self-guided nature trail wanders by many examples of vertical & horizontal tree molds or casts in the lava. No admission charged. See Newberry Volcanic Monument for more information.

Newberry National Volcanic Monument

The monument includes these areas: Newberry Crater, Paulina Peak, Paulina Falls, Lava Cast Forest, Lava River Cave, Lava Butte/Lava Lands Visitor Center, Benham Falls & many other interesting features of our volcanic past. Located 37 miles southeast of Bend is the largest ice-age volcano in Oregon. Several catastrophic eruptions formed the five mile wide caldera called Newberry Crater. Within the crater lie East and Paulina Lakes (known for their excellent trout fishing), a lava flow of black glass (obsidian), Paulina Falls and Paulina Peak. In the winter, roads into this area are plowed for the first ten miles to the Sno-park (permits required).

Tetherow Crossing

Rimrock Dr. Central Oregon Park and Recreation District Redmond, OR. 97756 541/ 548-7275 coprd@coprd.org Tetherow Crossing, originally owned by Andrew Jackson Tetherow, was a prominent river crossing, first by cable ferry & later by bridge, one of three major Deschutes River crossings during the settlement days of Central Oregon. Although Tetherow apparently never lived there, a house built on the site in 1878 is believed to have been the oldest occupied residence in the county, although major renovations have occurred over the years. At Tetherow Crossing you will see the modest home of Andrew & Saphronia Tetherow.
