Building a Better Nest asks the question, “What is required to build a home in concert with both the natural and the developed world?” Its genesis was Hess’s long camping experience, plus responses to her previous book, “To the Woods.” From her years living in tent and trailer, Hess wondered how to apply a similar standard of light living to a more socially adaptable and comfortable lifestyle, even while still on a limited budget.
