BendBroadband’s Jazz at the Oxford popular jazz series returns with a one-night performance from the legendary Pete Escovedo Orchestra featuring nationally renowned artist Sheila E.

The Tower Theatre will be hosting this dynamic group of seasoned musicians for one show only on Friday, February 12, at 8:00 pm. The show is sold out.

“This season, we wanted to bring a higher profile act to Bend for one of our shows. Along with our sponsors, Ray Solley, with the Tower Theatre Foundation, embraced the vision and partnered with us to bring these masters of the Latin jazz genre to the Tower Theatre, a new venue for the series. We thought this to be the perfect show to kick off Valentine’s weekend,” said Oxford Corporate’s Regional Vice-President of Operations, Ben Perle. “This show, featuring father Pete Escovedo with daughter Sheila E., will be quite unique and we are anticipating an exciting, lively performance.”

Pete Escovedo, along with such seasoned bandleaders as Eddie Palmieri and Ray Barretto, is today viewed as one of the standard bearers of Latin jazz. He leads what is widely considered one of the finest ensembles in Latin jazz. The end result is a joyous concoction of Latin rhythms with elements of jazz, R&B and funk that is hard to resist.

A California native, Pete was raised in Oakland. His father was an amateur singer and guitarist who passed along a love of Latin music, while young Pete discovered and cultivated a love of jazz largely on his own. Early on, he embraced the Latin jazz style, steadily building a reputation in the Bay Area as part of The Escovedo Brothers Latin Jazz Sextet.

In the late ‘60s, Carlos Santana hired Pete and his brother to join a hugely popular band. In 1970, he and his brother founded the band Azteca – a cooperative 14-piece Latin big band – and recorded two albums for Columbia. For more than four decades, Pete has been performing for audiences all over the world.

Joining Pete onstage will be his daughter, Sheila E., a nationally recognized drummer, percussionist, vocalist, songwriter, performer, arranger, producer, composer, instrumentalist, actress and humanitarian.

Sheila has been performing since the age of 17, recording and touring with notable artists such as Babyface, Natalie Cole, Gloria Estefan, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Nicks, Cyndi Lauper, Prince, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Ringo Starr, Stevie Wonder and countless others.

In 1983, with Prince’s help, she recorded her first solo album: “The Glamorous Life.” The first single, which shared the album name, earned multiple Grammy and American Music Award nominations, and won MTV’s Best Video Award.

After three months of sold out performances in Europe and the United States, Sheila began touring as the opening act for Prince’s 1984-85 sold out Purple Rain Tour. Later, she would join Prince on his 2004 Musicology tour.

Sheila’s extensive résumé also includes taking home the title of Grand Prize Winner on the third season of CMT’s hit show “Gone Country” and releasing her first country single and video for her song, “Glorious Train.”

In March, pianist extraordinaire Darrell Grant will return to the Jazz at the Oxford stage to perform his original composition, “The Territory”. Joining him will be vocalist Marilyn Keller and vibraphonist Mike Horsfall. Tickets are available at jazzattheoxford.com.
