High-schooler Tackles Tough Themes in Local Performance

Thoroughly Modern Productions Presents Oleanna by David Mamet at 2nd Street Theater

Thoroughly Modern Productions, Bend’s newest production company, brings the absorbing and dramatic play Oleanna by David Mamet. In this gripping work, a male college instructor and his female student sit down to discuss her grades and in a terrifyingly short time become the participants in a modern reprise of the inquisition. Innocuous remarks suddenly turn damning. Socratic dialogue gives way to heated assault. And the relationship between a somewhat fatuous teacher and his seemingly hapless pupil turns into a fiendishly accurate X-ray of the mechanisms of power, censorship and abuse.

The two-character play stars Richard Mueller, who has recent addition to the Bend theater scene and was most recently seen in Stage Right’s Production of Sordid Lives. The female lead will be played by Summit High-School Senior Bailey Olmstead who has most recently been seen as the lead in CTC’s The Spitfire Grill. The play has some dark themes of sexual harassment and political correctness, which requires a level of maturity and raw emotion. Anyone who has had the privilege of seeing Ms. Olmstead perform knows she possesses both. Oleanna is directed by David DaCosta, an East Coast native who has many professional and non-professional acting and directing credits to his name.

Performance Dates: June, 15 at 8pm, June 16 at 3pm and 8pm, June 22 at 8pm and June 23 at 3pm and 8pm. All tickets are on sale for $15 in advance or $18 at the door.
