R.A.C.O. is a non-profit organization of artists that have been working in clay for over 20 years. The group was started by Gloria Krug when she taught pottery at COCC and continues with new and old members. New members are always welcome; the only requirement is an interest in the Raku firing process and a desire to have fun.
Raku is an ancient Japanese process where bisque fired ceramics are coated with special glazes that contain copper and other minerals. After an initial firing to strengthen the pots glaze is applied and they are fired in an outdoor kiln to approximately 1900F. At that point the ceramic piece is removed from the kiln with tongs while still red hot and placed in a bed of combustible materials, such as paper, wood shavings, leaves or straw. After the combustibles ignite the firing pit covered to smother the fire and smoke the glazes. The result is spectacular colors, which may be iridescent, satiny, or glossy depending upon the chemical recipe of the glaze and the flaming materials.
