If you went to The Homeslice show you may have thought you fell down the rabbit hole and fell all the way to L.A. or some wonderland populated by dolls, sexy Native American braves and cartoon inspired fashion and art. The show kicked-off with the models arriving in Vintage Cars, walking a red carpet and posing in front of a black and white cartoon backdrop. Once inside, they strutted their stuff on a cat walk in a transformed Madhappy Lounge featuring The Homeslice’s special blend of native, folk-art meets pop culture collage/mixed-media pieces and jewelry.

The Homeslice, given name Sarah Viles, is originally from Prineville, but spent almost a decade in Los Angeles working in the movie industry as a stylist and production manager before returning to her roots in central Oregon. While in L.A. Viles owned her own boutique, Lavish, in Hollywood. She never forgot her roots however, and closed the boutique in 2007 ready to move back to Central Oregon. The urban edginess of L.A. continues to infuse her art, jewelry and fashion, but so do her country roots and tribal heritage. Her one-of-a-kind creations incorporate vintage and comic, edgy and traditional and her juxtaposition of native, folk-art and pop culture elements present delicious irony and beauty for contemplation.

Viles was recently asked to contribute a piece to the PUSH skate deck auction benefiting the Division Street Skate Park, where her custom-made comic collage deck earned one of the highest bids of the evening. She has shown her work at The Poet House, Rescue Moderne Consignment and other locations, but this was her first official show in Bend. Her jewelry is for sale at Rescue. Her next show will be an intimate showing of her art and jewelry at The Nature of Words’ First Friday on August 5 at their downtown literary arts center.
