Looking for a fun way to get in the holiday spirit? Join Bend Experimental Art Theater (BEAT) for its production of The Story of the Nutcracker. A twist on the traditional Nutcracker ballet, The Story of the Nutcracker is a play with dance. The stage comes alive with Nutcracker characters in this magnificent, antic-filled play that is perfect for all ages. Eighteen (18) of Central Oregon’s talented performers, ages 8-18, rehearsed for eight weeks in BEAT’s Art of Acting Workshop to bring The Story of the Nutcracker to the stage at 2nd Street Theater.

In The Story of the Nutcracker, set to the dreamy music of Peter Illyich Tchaikovsky, 30 characters come to life. The lively and enchanting production features the children, Fritz and Marie, who are visited by Uncle Drosselmeyer, who brings three very special dolls for their Christmas presents.

“The play form makes the understanding of the Nutcracker story much clearer.  If a child watches our play, then sees the traditional ballet, the story is much easier for them to follow,” said Director Pat Kmiec. “We can’t wait to see audience’s reactions to The Story of the Nutcracker. I’m sure they will have fun and many good laughs.”

Former Broadway dancer, Mary Kilpatrick, choreographed The Story of the Nutcracker. “This play is special because it incorporates creative dance along with a traditional storyline. The kids in this production are so talented, and we can’t wait to share the performances with our community.”

“I’m excited to play Clara, the doll who comes to life,” said Audrey Boos, age 10. “I’ve danced since I was 2 years old, but this is really fun and different for me because I get to act and dance. This has been a great experience.”

The directors are especially happy with how The Story of the Nutcracker cast has supported each other and bonded, making new friendships. “It has been great working with such a diverse cast of young actors,” said Tempel Corpstein, assistant director. “Watching the young performers learn and grow is incredibly rewarding. The support, encouragement and confidence they have for each other is something everyone can learn from. We’ve watched them go from complete strangers to close friends in a few shorts weeks.”

The Story of the Nutcracker is adapted by Michele Vacca from The Tales of Hoffman, The Dumas Story, and the Tchaikovsky ballet.
