Jeanie Smith Presents New Work at Art Adventure Gallery
Art Adventure Gallery will present Warm Spring’s artist Jeanie Smith’s new work, Conversations during October. The opening reception is Friday October 7, 5:30-7pm. Smith’s contemporary paintings and metal sculptures will be the subject of the artist’s talk followed with music by John Curnutt and refreshments.
This is the first showing of her sculptures, reminiscent of her acrylic paintings mixed with new images. “Infatuated with colors emerging, images unfolding, and mysterious dialogue presenting its self, I find inspiration as I create without intent,” said Smith.
Smith has been involved with art all of her life. She began drawing and painting at the age of five, encouraged by her family of artists. Known as a colorist, she paints contemporary abstract, blending the mystery of shape and form to create emerging depth to each creation. Her sense of humor is often found in some painting detail and/or title, should the observer choose to participate.
Featured in solo exhibits and group shows in Oregon and California, Smith was presented with the Patricia Burman Most Original Painting Award at the Palm Springs Art Museum in 2004. She has been awarded several Best of Show recognitions at Art Festivals and continues to show her art in Oregon. She says she has gained insight from the work of artists such as Joan Miro, Hans (Jean) Arp, Wassily Kandinsky, Josep Albers, Henry Matisse, and Pablo Picasso.
Her travels to France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Belize, Mexico, Hawaii and the Caribbean have expanded her art appreciation and have provided depth to her understanding of art history.
“There is a common thread of communication emerging from my paintings of the past, resulting in new and some familiar images,” explains Smith. “This process weaves a web of conversations between all beings, human, animal, plant and birds ... even the inert objects all seem to have the ability to interact.
“As I paint without intent, I am infatuated with the combining of colors, unaware of the end result until it happens. During this year, I began to design and create metal sculptures. They too, are reminiscent images and new images, mixed together finding a way to have that great conversation. Like humans, searching for the right topic and gentle humor. The sculptures present a new mysterious dialogue. I find the more I learn, the less I know.
“It is my hope, as you join me in observing this show, you will find a conversation that speaks to you, about you, and with you, bringing peace and harmony through visual interaction of the mind.”
Smith resides in Warm Springs and Portland, Oregon with her husband, Ken Smith and their silky terrier, Benni.
