World Premier of The King of Napa Valley opens at 2nd Street

kingnapaVintage Productions and Stage Right Productions present a winery family drama by Bend playwright, James Michael Lee. Opens on March 15 with a champagne reception and runs through March 30.

The King of Napa Valley is a fictional drama drawn from Lee’s experiences growing up in the Napa Valley during the 1960s, a period which is known as the renaissance of wine in the United States.

The drama centers around the Crescenti family who had owned the renowned Joseph Strauss Winery since prohibition. Salvatore, the oldest son, in his 60s, decides to break away from the family and start the first new Napa Valley winery since before World War II. His driving ambition to become the King of Napa Valley plus his tremendous sales skills bring instant success and conflict with his own immediate family. The audience will ask themselves, “What would I do if I had to choose between family and success?”

Sal’s friend and company lawyer provides comic relief, sometimes in a cynical way, in his perspective on the family struggles. Though all characters and events are fictional, aspects of all can be recognized from historical characters and incidents in Napa Valley history.

Director Susan Benson (Couple Dating, The Rainmaker) has picked a talented and interesting cast to portray the multi-dimensional characters. Whether the theme of greed gone wild, or the comedy, or the sheer interest of the changes in the wine business interest you, sit back, have a sip and you will enjoy an evening of entertainment. There will be various wine tastings and samples during the run of the show.
