Storms at sea, island magic, wild quests, mythical monsters, and enchanting spirits—BEAT Children’s Theatre invites Central Oregon families to dive into Shakespeare’s classic adventure, The Tempest, opening this November as a centerpiece of BEAT’s 20th anniversary season. Designed specifically to engage young audiences, this vibrant adaptation transforms classic literature into an accessible, high-energy theatrical experience.

The Tempest follows Prospero, the exiled Duke of Milan, who has spent years living on a mysterious island with his daughter, Miranda, after being betrayed by his brother, Antonio. When Prospero senses Antonio and the royal court sailing nearby, he summons a powerful magical storm that shipwrecks them on his shores. Marooned together, a lively mix of royals, rogues, and conspirators must navigate the island’s tricks, confront past betrayals, and discover what it truly means to forgive. Along the way, unexpected romance sparks when Miranda meets Ferdinand, the son of Prospero’s rival.

Faced with pivotal choices, Prospero must decide: Will he use his powers for revenge or reconciliation? Will he grant freedom to Ariel, the island’s loyal spirit? Will he relinquish his magic and step into an uncertain future?

“416 years later, Shakespeare’s final play is still deeply relevant,” says Director Bree Beal. “It’s a story of magic and adventure, but it also explores themes of power, our relationship with nature, and illusion versus reality. Shakespeare asks us to reflect on the human experience while taking us on an immensely fun, exciting, and hilarious journey!”

Looking ahead to the next 20 years, BEAT continues to expand its regional impact. While rooted in Bend, the organization provides transformative arts education to youth across Central Oregon—reaching as far as Madras and enchanting thousands of children each year. The Tempest marks the latest milestone in BEAT’s ongoing commitment to delivering world-class, family-oriented theater to the community.
