Former OMSI President Marilynne Eichinger reveals the good, the bad and the surprising history of the hands-on education movement.

Peer into the political and educational climate of the 60’s to discover factors that propelled the hands-on education movement into prominence. Follow the missteps and breakthroughs as Marilynne shares her story and those of 11 other dedicated museum directors, board volunteers and National Science Foundation managers as they strove to change the way science was taught. Their work set the stage for hands-on experiments to be incorporated into the science curriculum in public schools.

Marilynne Eichinger is an artist, writer, past president of the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) and the founder and publisher of the Museum Tour Catalog. Her book Lives of Museum Junkies: The Story of America’s Hands-On Science Movement was a 2016 Honorable Mention at the Great Midwest Book Festival Awards. Her forthcoming book Over the Sticker Bush Fence focuses on the issue of homeless and runaway youth, and the people and agencies trying to help them navigate into mainstream society. Join her for an evening discussion of her experiences in writings as well as art. Her books will be available for purchase and signing.
