Combine “planning” with “play” and you have the essential components for making a compelling portrait. In this workshop, we will start by exploring how to design a portrait that cannot be ignored. Wise choices will set you up from the beginning for making a successful painting.
Learn how to describe features accurately and where to use ambiguity for greatest effect. Study the impact of unusual color palettes. Then try out varying styles, exercises and techniques that can help to free your expressiveness, tapping your creative well. Introduce yourself to that inner child, and see what happens.

Day 1 (Friday) Focus on Design Value Pattern Playing with Texture
Day 2 (Saturday) Improving Accuracy Allowing Ambiguity Letting the Paint Lead
Day 3 (Sunday) Tipping the Color Style Exploration Group Sharing

About the Artist – René Eisenbart is an award winning Portland artist. You may have seen her botanicals in the Oregonian’s Homes & Gardens section. Drawn to human and animal forms, René uses expressive color, iconographic symbols and texture to lead the eye through her portraits. She uses alternative techniques — pouring an underpainting or marbling acrylic patterns over her transparent watercolor. She varnishes finished work with archival acrylic.
René teaches regionally and also in Tuscany and Kauai. She encourages each person’s unique art expression, creating a safe, supportive environment for growth and experimentation. You can learn more about René’s work at her website – Rene-Art.com.
