Beloved Scandinavian folk duo and SFF alums, Mikael Marin and Olov Johansson, are returning to Sisters in 2027!
As Väsen, Mikael Marin and Olov Johansson have refined their sound and their stage presence to near perfection. With 37 years of touring between them, they seem to defy the laws of physics in what appears to be telepathic communication.
Väsen’s music is intense, spirited, and full of humor. They have created a musical language entirely their own, as modern as it is ancient. With deep roots in the traditional music of Uppland, Sweden, they have always approached new musical possibilities with curiosity and an adventurous spirit.
Mikael Marin and Olov Johansson have played together since 1983, when they met at Oktoberstämman in Uppsala and discovered a shared repertoire and a similar approach to music. What was originally intended as the title of an album soon became the name of the band, as people began calling to book them as “Väsen.” The duo released their first recording, “Det rister i Örat” in 1985.
Since then, Väsen has continued to explore the music, stories, and traditions of generations of folk musicians while finding new ways to push the boundaries of the genre. They perform on a variety of niche stringed instruments, including the silverbasharpa, oktavharpa, three-row nyckelharpa, violoncello da spalla, and even a blue electric viola.
Their music is intense, spirited, and full of humor. Get early tickets to their performance at The Belfry on Monday, April 19!
