No Ordinary Artists Apply. Looking for the Extraordinary.

Ordinarily artists are inspired by what they see. The Call to Artists for the fifth City Walls at City Hall Art Show, opening in October, challenges artists to be extraordinary and find inspiration in the unseen.

July 9 is the deadline for artists to get their application into City Hall to be considered for participating in UNSEEN::WORLD. The art show partners with Bend Research and the non-profit Bend Science Station to express the theme, “Bend’s unseen world inspires community.”

Bend Research will take macro photographs under the electron microscope of objects common to Bend (i.e., a swan feather, juniper bark). This type of photography appears kaleidoscopic and unidentifiable. Twelve artists will be given each a photo and asked to create their art using the object in an unobvious way. The community will be invited to participate in a contest to identify the objects and will receive gifts from local businesses as prizes.

One artist (above the initial twelve) will be selected by the jury to meet with Bend 2030 to create a work of art inspired by the focus area, “Creative, Learning Culture.” Another artist will be paired with the Bend Science Station to create art inspired by the work of the organization.

UNSEEN::WORLD will open at Bend City Hall on First Friday, October 5 and run through March 29, 2013. An artist’s prospectus, calendar and more information on City Walls at City Hall is available at www.bendoregon.gov/citywalls.

A program of the City of Bend Arts, Beautification & Culture Commission’s (ABC Commission), the current show, INSIDE::OUT, opened First Friday, April 6 and will run through September 28, 2012. INSIDE::OUT can be viewed at Bend City Hall, Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. and on First Fridays, June through September from 5 to 9 pm.
