The international art world has long recognized Lim Khim Katy as an artist capable of capturing the invisible — the quiet dignity of a glance, the nostalgic warmth of a rural village, or the emotional gravity of ordinary human connection. From September 10-20, local art lovers will have the distinct privilege of experiencing her creative process firsthand. Toriizaka Art will host this exceptionally talented artist for an exclusive exhibition and live painting demonstration, offering a rare window into her deeply developed artistic vision rooted in compassion, observation, and shared humanity.

Born in Ho Chi Minh City to a Cambodian father and a Vietnamese mother, Katy’s multicultural heritage has profoundly shaped her unique perspective on life and art. For more than two decades, her artistic achievements have blossomed across Vietnam and internationally, with celebrated exhibitions spanning Asia, Europe, and North America. She recently immigrated to the United States, a transition that has brought a fresh evolution to her practice while keeping her grounded in the values that have always defined her work.

Capturing the Extraordinary in the Ordinary

Katy has earned widespread recognition as one of Vietnam’s most accomplished contemporary figurative painters. Her work, previously represented in Singapore, London, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Japan and Vietnam, blends realism, expressionism, and subtle surrealist elements into compelling visual narratives. Rather than simply recording the physical appearance of her subjects, Katy’s paintings serve as an open invitation into their inner lives, revealing vulnerability, quiet strength, and an enduring sense of hope.

“My figurative paintings come from the feelings generated by observing life around me, from people’s eyes, gestures and the individual emotions they express,” Katy explains. Working primarily from memory, observation, and emotional intuition rather than relying on posed models or photographs, she crafts canvases that feel both intensely personal and universally familiar. Her subjects are often everyday people whose subtle expressions become timeless reflections on love, perseverance, and daily life.

Moving Beyond the Horizon

Equally resonant are Katy’s luminous landscapes. For her, a landscape is never merely a representation of a physical place; it is an active expression of emotion, memory, and belonging. Drawing inspiration from the natural beauty and cultural landscapes of Cambodia and Vietnam — and now, the sweeping vistas of her new home in the United States — she transforms familiar scenes of villages, rivers, mountains, and countrysides into vibrant celebrations of color and atmosphere.

Katy’s recent paintings masterfully reflect both continuity and renewal, combining the rich cultural experiences of her life in Vietnam with the landscapes, communities, and new opportunities surrounding her. The resulting body of work speaks across cultures, celebrating our shared humanity with grace, empathy, and remarkable technical skill.

Mastery of Texture and Energy

A hallmark of Katy’s style is her masterful command of the palette knife. She builds her landscapes through heavy layers of richly applied paint, creating surfaces filled with physical movement, deep texture, and raw energy. Her bold compositions and brilliant colors capture the quiet beauty found in everyday surroundings. Under her knife, fields, waterways, trees, and village homes evolve into emotional landscapes — spaces where tranquility and nostalgia coexist.

Katy describes these works as an exploration of both serenity and feeling. “My paintings of nostalgic village homes and my vibrant landscapes are painted with the objective of expressing both strong emotion and great tranquility,” she says. Through her expressive use of color and texture, she successfully invites viewers to experience not only the stark beauty of the scene before them, but also the deep emotions and memories that those landscapes can awaken.
