Local young performers are preparing to take audiences to the Viking village of Berk in Ovation Performing Arts’ (OPA) production of “How to Train Your Dragon the Musical, Jr.” Fresh off its April release, the DreamWorks box office smash success is coming to the stage as OPA’s Forte cast transform into Vikings and dragons, November 6-14 at Caldera High School. Tickets are $15.

The story follows awkward, young Viking Hiccup who defies village traditions, befriends Toothless, a rare ferocious dragon, and forges a friendship with his foe as the two learn to trust each other to unite their warring worlds. While the plot may be familiar, a few twists will surprise, such as talking and singing dragons. The songs are all original for this adaptation, with music by Veronica Mansour and lyrics by Mansour and Kate Thomas, who also wrote the book. Some likely favorites include the epic opening ensemble number “In Berk / We’re Not Leaving,” Hiccup’s anthem “What a Viking Can Do,” heroine Astrid’s showcase solo, “Just Another Girl” and “Kill on Sight,” which brings The Book of Dragons to life.

“I am so pleased to have the opportunity to direct over 60 extremely talented students in the new junior musical from MTI (Music Theatre International),” said Director Jana Mohr. “This story has meant so much to me since I first saw it on the big screen 15 years ago. Having that many kids and a script with dozens of featured ensemble roles was an unexpected gift.”

Mohr, who is new to OPA, is the founder of CoCreated, an all-ages drama club. She’s been directing plays for several years as well as volunteering, ensuring community access to theater. After years of continuous growth, OPA Creative Director and show Musical Director, Jonathan Shepherd, sought her out to bring new life, skill and passion to OPA’s youth. Her ideas and vision captured not just the children, but the parent and friend volunteers working tirelessly to bring elaborate scenery, edgy costumes and realistic props to life.

“This show would not be possible without the dedicated team of volunteers and production staff at Ovation Performing Arts,” Mohr said. “There will be six opportunities to catch a performance – I hope to see you there!”

In addition to the show, a raffle basket, photo booth and candy grams to send to cast members will be available in the lobby. Following the conclusion of “How to Train Your Dragon the Musical, Jr.,” OPA’s teen through adult group will present “West Side Story” in February 2027. The Debut and Brava age groups will complete the season with shows in the spring. Auditions for “West Side Story” take place October 12-14.
